Sun and the City

As we sink deeper into the summer months there is no denying the intensity of the sun. Living in the city creates the paradox of heat but not always direct rays. Finding shade is easy enough but is that a reliable form of sun protection? One of the most debated subjects every summer is whether to use sunscreen or skip it. The growing confusion is partly due to rumors, misconceptions, and a lot of assumption.

What is SPF and how does it work? What is the difference between sunscreen and sunblock? Which one is better? Stronger? And does it really protect you? What exactly is it protecting you from?

SPF is a measurement of sun protection against burning. And that is all. It does not protect skin from getting cancer. I repeat, SPF does not protect your skin from cancer. SPF protects our skin from UVB rays. Ultra Violet B rays are the light that causes burning. A strong enough burn can cause cells to mutate into cancer. This type cancer is isolated and can be removed by a dermatologist. UVA rays on the other hand, damage our cells at a deeper level. These rays are responsible for melanoma cancer cells. Melanoma is a deadly cancer that spreads to other tissue in the body rapidly. SPF does not protect your skin from these damaging rays.

So, when choosing sun protection, keep in mind regardless of the number you choose, the length of time you are in the sun is how long you are exposed to UVA rays. (source)

That brings us to SPF. SPF stands for ‘Sun Protective Factor’. When choosing how much SPF to use, it is important to understand what that actually means. The short answer is- nothing. SPF is determined by how many times less likely you are to get a burn than if you wore nothing at all. So, going from a 30 to an SPF 50 has negligible difference. What does matter is if you burn. Wearing sunscreen or sun block lessens your chances of burning but, you can still get burned. Those with fair skin are the most susceptible to burn regardless of wearing sunscreen or sun block.

More important than how high the SPF, is choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen which protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

That being said, Canadian and European formulations have had the most innovation in recent years over the US. This is due to the FDA controlling the approval of over the counter sunscreens. Recently the Sunscreen Innovation Act was passed to expedite new formulations hitting the US market.

So, let’s look at some of the rumors:

Will using sunscreen or sunblock inhibit Vitamin D absorption?
No, you will still benefit from Vitamin D while wearing sunblock. (source)

Does sunscreen cause skin cancer?
No. There have been studies that show higher incidences of skin cancer among those who regularly wear sunscreen. That is not necessarily a causation link. This could be from a few factors. People who wear sunscreen tend to be those who burn more easily and are already at a higher risk for skin cancer. Studies have also shown that sunscreen can give a false sense of security resulting in people staying in the sun longer. (source)

And, what is the difference between sunscreen and sunblock? Is one better than the other?
Sunblock offers a physical barrier to protect you from the suns damaging rays. Sunscreen protects your skin through a chemical process. Both are effective and more important is which one you will use. There is some controversy regarding the long term safety of using sunscreen that should be considered. (source)

One form of sunscreen that is in the hot seat is aerosol cans. There have been reported fire safety issues as well as environmental concerns. Many experts do not recommend the use of sprays, especially for young children. (source)

There are other ways to protect your skin from sun damage. Limiting sun exposure during mid day is always an option. Finding shade and using hats and light weight but protective clothing helps eliminate sun exposure as well. (source)

Moderation is key. Any sun exposure exposes us to sun damage and cancer causing rays. So, if you will be in the sun, look for a broad spectrum SPF and use it. But, also keep your eye on the clock for how long you are exposed.

Intense Hydration

Barbara Yniguez

Vanichi Magazine BEAUTY

Creating intensely hydrated skin has never been so accessible. Women and men whose skin care regimen focuses on hydration definitely have a youthful and healthy glow that is both desirable and attainable.

To achieve that glow everyone is after, think of moisturizer as something you see. Finding the right moisturizer is key of course. What you may not realize is how important the application is. Always apply moisturizer to freshly washed skin. For added hydration use a skin mist prior to applying any lotion or cream. This will prep skin’s surface to absorb the product. Gently massaging moisturizer onto skin, leave some excess over your skin’s surface.  Waiting a few minutes while the skin has the opportunity to absorb as much of the product as it can, gently smooth out the remainder of the moisturizer. You will be amazed how much more hydrated your skin is throughout the day.

Today’s skin care market is vast. We have tried and tested the best. Moisturizer is the center piece of any skin care regimen. Our standouts make the cut because they are both highly effective and attainable.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture

The 25 year old company has a long line of high quality, high performing products developed by two generations of doctors. The Hydo-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture is a silky cream that glides onto the skin leaving a light yet richly supple texture. The moisture lasts all day. We loved how easy foundation blended over it.

After just a few days of use, we saw brighter smoother skin. Recommended for normal to dry skin. This is definitely a keeper.

Embryolisse Baume Riche

Labeled as an Artists Secret, Embryolisse skin care can be found in the makeup kits of celebrity and fashion makeup artists all over the world. This cult favorite has stood the test of time. Embryolisse has been a highly regarded gentle skin care line for sixty years. We instantly fell in love with Baume Riche.

This luxuriously rich cream drenches dry skin with emollients such as shea butter, olive extract and white bees wax. The immediate drenching is hypnotic and addictive. Our skin has never felt so soft and supple. This is an exceptional cream for dry dehydrated skin’s daily use or for a moisture treatment.

Glossier Priming Moisturizer

This stand out product line is the brain child of beauty entrepreneur Emily Weiss, creator of Into The Gloss. Glossier is a brand spanking new line focusing on skin and it’s name sake glossiness. We love how the Priming Moisturizer is build-able, creating a smooth even surface, acting as a primer. By applying multiple thin layers, skin plumps.

The hydration creates younger vibrant skin. This product is excellent for normal to oily skin or layered over a richer cream for dry skin. Although being the new kid on the block, Glossier is holding it’s own in the “must have” category of moisturizers.

Vanichi asks 3 top beauty experts to pick their favorite luxe lips.

Following makeup company trends is like running after the ice cream truck as a kid! This past season has kept us licking our lips. Our favorite tried and true brands have not disappointed. We have seen the luxury of  lipstick return with a blood red vengeance. Super stars like Tom Ford Beauty have made luxe lips a must have in every true makeup enthusiasts arsenal. Earlier, Tom Ford released a massive 50 piece color collection Lips and Boys. Some of us felt the urge to own them ALL (you know who you are)!

Other luxe lip lines weren’t far behind. Lipstick is more than a bullet shaped wax tube. Burberry Beauty tubes all have signature plaid carved into each color, lest you forget who you are putting on. Monograms aren’t for towels anymore. While perusing the glossy aisles of Neiman Marcus, you will be greeted by every shade with its own insignia of luxury. Branding has gone beyond packaging. And, we are loving it. What better way to remind us how much we love our lip color than to make it a beautiful accessory to our everyday. A little bit of opulent pampering during our mundane. Suddenly, every time we pull out our sleek magnetic cases becomes an occasion to enjoy the small luxuries in life.

I asked top fashion and celebrity makeup artists to share their favorite luxe lips :

Anastasia Durasova

The Wall Group NY

Pick: Marc Jacobs

“What I love about Marc Jacobs is the texture. It doesn’t dry out lips. It has an incredible amount of moisture so it goes on creamy and smooth. It has a wearability for all women with just enough pigment to be worthwhile but not overwhelming. My favorite color for this season is #281 Clara. This is the perfect universal bright color for making a statement without the obviousness of red.”

Kelly Hunt

Cloutier Remix LA

Pick: Tom Ford

“My favorite luxury lipstick has to be Tom Ford. It has some of the most exotic and luxe ingredients such as soja seed extract and Brazilian murumuru butter. The texture is amazingly creamy and nourishing, and the pigment is true. What you see is what you get. I don’t think purchasing a luxury lipstick is “silly” or “frivolous”. I think of it as a mini investment. My favorite shade right now by Tom Ford is a color called Spanish Pink. A client just introduced me to this soft pink shade and I fell in love! It is so chic and makes a statement without being loud.”

Adam Fleischhauser

Naomi Campbell’s personal makeup artist

Pick: Kevyn Aucoin

“My favorite lipstick pick this season is Kevyn Aucoin Blood Roses.
I love it because of its versatility and it’s luxurious quality. It can be used many different ways even though it’s color is a deep bordeaux rose. First, you can use it straight from the tube for its deep true color. Second, you can blot it off for a light weight stain berry effect. Third, layering gloss on top of it creates a patent leather shine. And lastly, you can use it as soft cheek color by slightly stippling it on the cheeks with your fingers.
Because you can  use it many different ways, to me you can really tell the magic and alchemy was really put into this lipstick by Kevyn himself… its just so unique. And you get to experience a little bit of Kevyn’s genius every time you use it.”

With all the choices available, there is definitely a luxurious match for everyone who wants that moment of bliss that a decadent tube of rich color gives. The current luxe lipstick in my bag is Burberry Beauty Kisses in Oxblood. It is the most delicately smooth formula I have ever tried with a matte finish. The color is that perfect cranberry that is a statement on everyone. I love the satisfying feeling of that substantial glossy metal packaging and the clean clasp of the magnet, insuring the security of that bliss in a tube.

Gossamer Muses

Fall/Winter fashion weeks have both captivated and intrigued for 2016. Designers beauty choices fell back to deep hues of orchid, berry and wine but with a fresh take. Creamy waxen fair skin was paired with berry ripe lips and softly shaded eyes at Siblin. Heavy black liner smeared into deep eerie shapes  were also complemented by glowing opal skin at Dries Van Noten. Models took on an otherworldly presence seemingly losing density.

Designers' runway beauty such as Christian Dior, Dries Van Noten, and Givenchy have perfectly captured haunting color with rich tones of emerald, berry, magenta and even auburn.  Making the leap from entertainment to fashion one only needs to visualize American television show Salem or upcoming Tim Burton film  Miss Peregrines' Home For Peculiar Children to feel the overtones of fall runways.

Christian Dior : Richly hued lips with a lacquer finish are replicated by layering Be Flawless Luxury Matte Lipstick Dark Purple with Be Flawless Luxury Lip Gloss in Flawless. Define and shape lashes into spidery perfection with Ciate Triple Shot Mascara.

Dries Van Noten: Thick black eye makeup is strikingly applied in artful disarray.  Using Ciate London's Double Lines allows for both an ink spill finish or a smoldering blurred edge.

Gareth Pugh:  Lips were defined into 1940s esque peeked cupids bows using rich orchid and wine with a gloss finish. Be Flawless Plumping Lip Gloss is a perfect pick for fall lips with that vintage flair.

Givenchy:  Smoldering eyes in camel and auburn hues were created by sweeping layers across eyelids into a cat eye shape. Recreate this look with Ciate London 'The Fearless' palette.

So, What’s Up With Your Hair?

Originally published by LA Canvas

So, what IS up with your hair?

For the past year and a half, we have collectively given our hair a beating. If we didn’t bleach it out to white we were dip dying, ombre-ing it to death or changing out pastels quicker than a cotton candy dispenser. And guess what? It now feels like cotton candy. Too bad it doesn’t taste like it.

We need help- fast!

We could start fresh. Get our pixie cut on stronger than 1992. But, then we will bleach it to white and put left over Easter egg dye on it. (Yes, we do do that.) And the cycle begins again.

Why don’t we just stop? Take a minute, and condition. Not with unrealistic goals of instant bouncy shiny locks. That never happens. Lets have realistic goals of not seeing clumps fall out in the shower.

I recently made a discovery that saved my post ombre haystack. I put a bit of Kerastace oil in my dry hair then, ran a flat iron over it. Again, hair was dry. Never use hot tools on even remotely damp hair.

When we color or bleach hair we are opening up the cuticle to release keratin and pigment. If we do it enough times we have permanent holes in the cuticle. So, by sealing it with an oil, it refills those holes. This creates a smooth cuticle and shine.

There are several great oils we all probably already own. My favorite is Elixir Ultime from Kerastace. Another great choice is Moroccan oil for coarser heavier hair. If you have fine, delicate hair I recommend Argan Oil Serum By Amica. It is the lightest of the oils I have tried and won’t weigh it down.

What you shampoo and condition with in the shower is important too. Look for conditioners with fewer or no sulfates.

Right now, I am addicted- ADDICTED I tell you, to Kevin Murphy products. They are 100% sulfate and paraben free. You can choose from a plethora of cures for dry breaking hair. My faves are Born.Again.Masque and, Angel.Rinse. Both conditioners leave my hair ultra silky and I am starting to get my bouncy shiny locks back. And, since Kevin.Murphy products come in super sleek pastel bottles and smell like yummy fruity flower scents, I feel like I practically have cotton candy hair anyway.

I have also decided to forgo any hair ties. It is so difficult but elastic hair ties (even the covered ones) put strain on already fragile hair which leads to breakage. Instead, try a softer approach like cute scarves or coated bobby pins (not the rusty ones sitting on your sink). Within a week or two, you will notice a lot less breakage.

So I (we) have a new goal. Long bouncy locks of fruity smelling sunshine just in time for summer!

Flawless Skin

Its what we all want right? So, what is the secret to looking gloriously golden with a flawless complexion?

Less is more. Well, more or less. When seeking a luminous healthy glow some of us can literally wash and go. For most, that goes out the window when we hit 12. For the rest of us, we need a little help. And, with the bounty of products out there it is easy to feel overwhelmed and ultimately disappointed.

So, I offer a step by step look at creating the dermis dreams are made of.

Step 1: I know, I know. No one wants to hear they need to stop smoking and drinking diet Coke. While I am at it, eat your vegetables! And, fruit. Drink lots of water, you will be thirsty when you stop drinking the diet Coke.

OK, now on to the fun stuff.

Step 2: Start with clean skin, not stripped skin. Use a gentle cream or mild wash.  If you are prone to break outs, still use a mild wash like Cetafil. Add a drop of tea tree oil to inhibit breakouts. Once a week a little Grape seed oil all over is amazing on all skin types.

Step 3: Moisturize! I love Alba Natural Hawaiian Moisture Cream. I use it before every makeup application. I find it has a perfect balance of moisture and oil to perfectly prep the skin. And, at around $20 it is a great buy. Another makeup artist favorite is Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentrate.  Touted as the 24 hour miracle creme, its loved and used widely by those in the know.

Step 4: Conceal. I like to use a creamy peach or yellow toned concealer in the areas that most need coverage. Not just under the eyes but everywhere there is discoloration. The reason I recommend a creamy texture is when creating a flawless natural glow, there is no room for dry or cracking concealer.  Try Face Atelier Ultra Camouflage Duet (32.00). It comes with two shades to get your perfect match.

Step 5: Get the Glow.  Women who look like they are glowing from within don’t look oily. So, to avoid over shimmering the skin, use a luminizer before your foundation.  Giorgio Armani Beaute Fluid Sheer (59.00) comes in 6 shades of glow. Dab a little over the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and above the bow of the lip.

Step 6: Finally, lightly apply a touch of foundation, just as needed. I am going to recommend a sheer natural finish. There is no need to over do the dew.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE Giorgio Armani Beaute’s Luminous Silk Foundation (59.00). It blends effortlessly and a little goes a long way.  Another great option is Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Skin Foundation SPF 15 (46.00).

With spring here, skin is in. And what a great way to start spring, with soft natural beautiful skin!

Vanichi Beauty profiles Nicoleta Barbarasa

It is hard to believe in our very recent past eyebrows were just eyebrows. Men and women roamed the streets without so much as a thought to this very distinctive feature. For the most part, brows were inconsequential.

Unless of course you frequented Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills has become the capital of beautiful brows. For the past 25+ years you could find a brow specialist to sculpt, trim and beautify brows in many salons and makeup studios. By all accounts, this mecca of luxurious beauty was ahead of the game. But, not all are equal. One luminary amongst the brow elite is Nicoleta Barbarasa. We met Nicoleta at her current location, Brighton Salon in the heart of Beverly Hills. Nicoleta’s warm smile greeted us as we walked in and, her confidence immediately put us at ease. With a very gentle touch our pain free brow shaping was actually enjoyable. Nicoleta’s very skilled hands have groomed the Hollywood elite as well as a dedicated following for twenty years.

Upon our finished service we were awed at Nicoleta’s precision and eye for symmetry. Our brows emerged looking full, arched and in perfect balance. It is easy to see why Nicoleta’s clientele includes some of Hollywood’s most fashionable and beautiful such as Sienna Miller, Nicole Richie and Kristen Cavalarri.

Nicoleta is certainly a beauty influencer and one to watch.  The Vanichi beauty team brows are now safely in her hands.

The Sweet Life

Summer beauty can be fresh, easy and fun with just a few adjustments to your regular routine. Getting a gorgeous summer glow for Cynthia and Brittany starts from within. Both women know that taking care of their bodies and minds with healthy eating and exercise is their biggest beauty "secret". An individualized skincare regimen, along with a few cosmetics for effortless summer glow, are the hidden gems for these ladies.

First, let’s talk about the girl’s skin care essentials:

Brittany's beauty routine is simple but effective. To keep her smooth skin hydrated and bright, she alternates between Beauty Counter Cleansing Balm and Beauty Counter Charcoal Cleansing Bar. The Charcoal Cleansing Bar keeps her skin clear and smooth while the Cleansing Balm gives her that extra calming and moisture if her skin is dehydrated or irritated. Brittany's can't-live-without product is Perricone MD Deep Moisture Therapy. By utilizing products with both high and low price points, she balances her beauty budget and splurges on her favorite spa treatments. Aside from swearing by the importance of getting 8 hours of sleep per night, regular facials keep her skin healthy and glowing. Some of her regular treatments include microdermabrasion and oxygen facials.

Cynthia is a busy mom on-the-go, but she makes the time to care for herself and keep her golden complexion glowing. She relies on Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel to keep her skin squeaky clean without drying her out. She loves Dr. Hauschka Eye Balm to moisturize the delicate skin around eyes because it also minimizes the appearance of fine lines. Finally, she uses Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist throughout the day for an extra little boost of moisture. Cynthia swears by keeping her hat and sunscreen handy to protect her complexion from the California sun, along with all-day hydration. That's right, don't forget those water bottles! Cynthia also sees her facialist every eight weeks for microdermabrasion. She loves micro-needling to promote collagen production, reduce fine lines, and add extra glow to her complexion.

Now, for the makeup:

Creating a signature look that captures both women's vibrant beauty and unique taste is a makeup artist's dream. I met Brittany first, and our aesthetic was an instant match. When I met Cynthia, my objective was to honor her individuality while incorporating a balance with Brittany since they are photographed together so often. None of this was a challenge since both have impeccable taste and gorgeous faces.

The twins’ beautiful healthy skin is the perfect canvas for sheer coverage with an added glow. I prep their skin with Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs and Rosewater by Mario Badescu and a light moisturizer. One of my go-to products is Enlightened Radiance Cream by Skinn. It has a built in golden glow that radiates through makeup. I prefer to use a sheer coverage foundation like Diorskin Nude Air Serum by Dior. This keeps the skin fresh and light, not overdone.

A warm peachy blush is the color for summer. A new favorite is the California Dreaming Cheek Palette by Lorac. I follow this up with Film Star Bronze and Glow by Charlotte Tilbury in Medium to Dark. I swipe the brush across both colors to achieve a perfect warm bronze. Paired with a coral or peach sheer lip, both girls look bronzed and flawless.

For eyes, we definitely love lots of fluttery lashes. Both Cynthia and Brittany have perfected their mascara skills and achieve that perfect lash line. Cynthia gravitates toward a shimmery gold lid with a soft crease in a warm amber tone, while Brittany goes for top and bottom smudged liner. Britt loves trying new colors, so we usually choose something to coordinate with whatever she is wearing. Finally, we perfect their brows. Cynthia loves a nicely arched brow and so to achieve that we use Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Taupe. Brittany's brows are softer and less defined so for her we use Burberry Effortless Eyebrow Definer in Taupe for that softer effect.

Our last step is to set everything with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light for a seamless finish. Voila! You have all the insider tips to get Britt and Cyn’s effortless summer glow!

Barbara Yniguez

Vanichi Beauty Director Barbara Yniguez profiles WINXED Beverly Hills Luxury Eyelash Extensions.

There is something so feminine about long fluttering lashes. Not only do long lashes enlarge the eyes, they are also a sign of youth and beauty. Lashes thin and shorten as we age. Or, some of us just never had much of them to begin with.  Both men and women indulge in lash lengthening.  With many options on the market promising results, I decided to finally try lash extensions. I was immediately referred to lash guru Taynay, owner of Winxed. Touted as the best, why would I go anywhere else?

I have had reservations about lash extensions.  After all, this ubiquitous service has had mixed results depending on who you talk to. I was reassured by Taynay’s impeccable reputation and her clients fierce loyalty.

Winxed is located on a quiet block on S. Robertson Blvd in Beverly Hills. Tucked away off the street with no signage, it is a quiet retreat. Inside I was greeted with water and a seat in an old Hollywood style beauty studio. Winxed offers several beauty treatments including brow shaping along with extensions.

Once in Taynay’s private treatment room, I was instantly relaxed. Taynay works fast and without hesitation. This is expected when you realize she has been doing lash extensions for almost a decade. Her skilled hands are almost unnoticeable while she seamlessly enhances each lashes length.

Once complete I was in awe of Taynay’s beautiful work. Tay (as she is commonly known) follows each individual clients natural lash growth. She matches lash per lash. This resulted in my lashes looking like they did in my teens. The effect is noticeable but also completely natural. When closely examined, I could not find a trace of where the lashes were attached. As a makeup artist who has closely  seen lash extensions done all over the country on other people, Taynay’s application more than met my expectations.

Taynay has shared her technique with her team. Every lash technician at Winxed has been trained to do impeccable lash extensions just as Taynay does. Which is is good for team  Vanichi, who will be lining up.
